Why do cities show different times?
Each city keeps time by its IANA time zone — a UTC offset plus that region's daylight saving rules. Two cities differ by however far apart their current offsets are, which can change during the year when one of them shifts its clocks and the other does not.
What does the UTC offset next to each city mean?
It is how far the city's clocks currently sit from Coordinated Universal Time. UTC+08:00 means eight hours ahead of UTC; UTC−04:00 means four hours behind. Offsets shown here already include daylight saving time where it is in effect.
Why does a city sometimes show a different weekday?
Around the international date line the calendar itself diverges: when it is Friday evening in New York it is already Saturday in Sydney and Auckland. The small weekday label next to each time shows which day that city is on right now.
